The floors

Eight rooms. Three let floors. No lift, because the shaft that was started in 1983 was taken out again and the listing would not have allowed another.

Level 01 · The beletage

A first-floor room with the desk set into the window reveal

First floor

Two rooms, the tallest windows in the house and a ceiling of 3.4 metres. Both look over the quay. These are the rooms with the moulded beams, which are listed and therefore exactly as they were.

  • RoomsTwo
  • Ceiling3.4 metres
  • WindowsOver the quay, south
  • BedsOne double in each
  • StairsOne flight from the hall

Level 02 · The middle

A second-floor front room with the shutters open

Second floor

Three rooms: two at the front over the water, one at the back over the court. The back room is the quietest in the house, because the Merwede traffic is a constant low noise at the front and is not audible at the back.

  • RoomsThree
  • Ceiling2.9 metres
  • WindowsTwo south, one north
  • BedsTwo doubles, one twin
  • StairsTwo flights

Level 03 · Under the gable

The back room, in linen and oak

Third floor

Two rooms with the lowest ceilings and the best light, because the windows are nearly as tall and the rooms are shallower. The gable window in the front room opens inward, which takes a moment to work out.

  • RoomsTwo
  • Ceiling2.5 metres
  • WindowsOne south, one north
  • BedsOne double, one twin
  • StairsThree flights, no lift

In every room

  • Shutters that work, on every window that faces the water.
  • A kettle, loose tea, and coffee ground that morning in the kitchen.
  • Underfloor heat, which is slow: set it the night before, not an hour before.
  • No television in any room. There is one in the back room off the hall.

Stairs

The stair is the 1731 stair. It is 780 millimetres wide, the risers are 205 millimetres, and it turns twice between each floor. A large suitcase will go up it and a very large one will not. Say so when you book and we will put you on the first floor.

Arriving

Rooms from two in the afternoon, and we ask for them back by eleven. There is no car park. The nearest public one is Veemarkt, six minutes away on foot, and loading on the quay is tolerated for about fifteen minutes.

All gaming in this house happens in one room of it and nowhere else. The Melaveh Room runs nothing online, opens no account for anyone and settles no payment through this website.
